Sam Kelloway- Portrait Artist
Artist Statement
For as long as I can remember art has been my passion. My excitement and love of painting started over 40 years ago. Although I never pursued art as a career, it has always been a part of my life. Over the years I have created many works for family and friends which still hang in their homes today. Creating custom works of art has been my main focus for most of my years of painting.
Watercolour was my first choice, which I used for many years, but since have graduated to the acrylic medium, which gives me the opportunity to express myself in the vibrant and natural colours of nature.
The landscape is a subject that I cannot shake, and it will always be a part of my painting, however portraiture has also been a passion of mine for years. Through serious and intense study of portraiture, gathering instruction from workshops, instructional videos, museums, art magazines and books I feel at this point in my life that portraiture is something that I want to pursue. I presently paint portraits on commission. I take my own photographs as I feel a good photograph is the foundation of a great portrait. I also use photos from clients if it has special meaning.
I work towards a painterly realism in all my paintings. Good drawings and composition, rendered with strong natural colour in such a way that you can still sense and feel the paint.
In all my paintings I strive to do museum quality work that will be around for many generations. My ambition is to create works of art that will be cherished for a lifetime.
